How does checkerboard cake pan work




















It is a 2-person job. One person has to hold the insert down firmly, while the other person pours the batter in. If this is not done, the batter will "bleed" into other sections.

The insert will also move around while one person works alone to add the batter. This could be alleviated if the insert were heavier, and would stay in place on its own. Second, the directions are pretty brief. More explanation would help. Rated 5 out of 5 by Cheri from Checkerboard worked great!

Cake Pan set came a little late, but I was able to find a square checkerboard cake pan set at a local cake store and the cake turned out great! I did read lots of reviews about how to pull the dividers out carefully and the cake worked! Just don't forget to place the layers in the right order; I almost messed that part up! The plastic insert leaked batter where it should not have so it did not give the desired effect. It did not look like a checkerboard. It was my first time to use it and I probably will not use it again. Too much time to get a "muddled" look. Add to butter mixture alternately with milk; mix well after each addition. Continue beating 1 minute. Divide batter in half. Stir melted chocolate into half the batter; mix well.

Place Batter Dividing Ring into one prepared pan. Follow instructions in pan set for filling sections shown below for convenient filling, place batter in disposable decorating bag and remove ring. Follow filling instructions for 2nd and 3rd pan. Bake minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pan and cool completely. Assemble cake. Position layer with chocolate cake on outside onto serving plate; spread top with chocolate icing.

Position layer with yellow cake on outside on top of 1st layer; spread top with chocolate icing. Position final layer; ice entire cake with chocolate icing. As a side note, you will likely have to trim the edges a bit to get even rectangles, which provides a perfect snacking opportunity while you work!

I've made it several Xs I didn't know it worked in the round. I used bread pans and put in one layer of color in each pan two or three pans , then cut the layers lengthwise, and arranged them.

Fantastic presentation. Years ago, I went to a church related rummage sale. Those are the best.. And, when you go to the big sales, if anyone can find the old Universal Cast Iron Grinder.. Get it! I have a set of these pans which I have used once. A tip came with the pans, saying to refrigerate the batter first. It's been so long, I can't remember any details, but the one cake I made turned out pretty well.

The Fanny Farmer baking book has a recipe that works pp of the Ed , and the batter's stiff enough that you don't need a special pan.

I've made it quite successfully. I've never done it, but it seems like you would need very viscous batter, like the consistency of thick pancake batter. Maybe try cutting down the amount of liquid? When my late mother-in-law downsized her home to move into senior's only housing, she gave me one of these pans. I had it in with my baking things for a long time, when I finally decided to give it a whirl.

It turned out okay--didn't do anything special to it, but decided that it was far too much work for what it was.
