Midi thru how does it work

In this situation you may have to use special cables or converter boxes to interface with devices using the 5-pin connector. Information flows in one direction per MIDI connection. The correct way to connect them can be a bit confusing depending on the situation. To get it right you have to follow the direction of your signal flow. The output of the device sending MIDI information must always be connected to the input of the device you intend to receive it. Remember—you can set each device to a different channel and use a single stream of MIDI to control them all.

There are as many ways to use MIDI as there are musicians. But there are some typical MIDI workflows that most producers should understand. With the help of VST plugins this setup turns your MIDI controller into whatever you want it to be: Millions of different synths, drum machines, guitars, flutes, horns, or pretty much anything else you can dream up. You can edit sequences in the piano roll and and input notes manually the help of the controller to play your parts.

That means you can use all your digital tools and techniques to input and edit notes and play them back with a real synthesizer—or any other MIDI capable device. This setup is like a mini DAW rig made up of entirely hardware gear. This is how most producers used MIDI before computers were cheap enough to be commonly used in music. The original architects of the protocol did a fantastic job of creating a way for digital instruments to communicate. For one thing, the power and speed of even the simplest modern digital gear is light years ahead of what designers were working with in the 80s.

All this has led to the development of the all new MIDI 2. MIDI gives you access to every sound you can think of and all the editing power you need to make your music production fast and seamless. That sheds some light on where MIDI can come into your workflow. Channel messages transmit up to two kinds of data at once. This is part of how MIDI can capture the expressiveness of a performance.

Sorry for kicking up a fuss. Big Bang, thanks for the clear, concise description of using Midi thru. Based on your information I was finally able to get 5 midi devices running which are controlled by both my keyboard and the computer. I came to a stop about a year ago but tonight finally figured out the system of chaining devices and assigning channels.

You made the lightbulb go off in my brain. No it wasn't necessary, but I liked it. Your question being posted on gearslutz could also be questioned of it's necessity, but yet, In any case the answer to your question took about 10 seconds of googling and the response is in the first result.

If you don't understand it then it's okay there are other results available, right after that one to cross reference. I fail to see how your "research" led you to an impasse that only could be breached through posting the question here on this forum. Which leads me to the conclusion that you posted it because you simply wanted to do it that way, and that's fine. Nobody has gone around saying that your "laziness and lack of understanding has ruined this community I answered your post the way I did simply because I wanted to do it that way.

It doesn't make me arrogant. Just a wise guy. I accept that criticism. If you think a relatively subtle wisecrack "ruins" this community you should stick around. Your feelings have only begun to get hurt. Cazmov - yes, some people can really be smart-ass dicks around here. This is one firum where you are likely to get educated and informed answers. It begs the question of why this forum is useful at all when everybody can simply use google.

I am with you - why wade through a million results from people who are probably not as likely to be as tuned in as the folk on this forum re. As you already know, for every smart-ass lurking on this forum to put people down there are a thousand good guys willing to actually help and and make the forum the great asset it is.

Wouldya look at that? Guess which thread popped up as the first link.. After passing through three or four instruments, the MIDI messages may start to become unreliable, resulting in notes which stick on or refuse to play at all.

Some of your MIDI gadgets may lack the midi thru sockets see above which are required for connecting several devices together in a 'chain'. Where midi thru ports are provided, the signal throughput may introduce 'duty cycle' distortion or more rarely time delays. Consequently, 'chain' performance may be unacceptable - particularly on 'chains' of three or more.
